Naturally, you’ll have some questions about The Alexander Technique: the "how?", "why?", "what?", and "how much?" of it. So I’ve answered some of the more frequently asked questions here.
Q: What is The Alexander Technique?
A: The Alexander Technique is a form of practical self-help which anyone can use - whatever their age or physical condition. People use The Technique for a variety of reasons. Some of the most popular include: postural or breathing problems, pain relief, performance enhancement or personal improvement.
Q: How does it work?
A: The Alexander Technique works by bringing one’s whole self back into natural balance, before we adopted the everyday bad habits that over the years take their inevitable toll.
Q: I’ve tried almost everything. Why should The Alexander Technique work where other treatments have failed?
A: Unlike specific treatments that isolate a specific symptom and attempt to deal with the effects, The Alexander Technique deals with the whole person. This means that you’ll see an overall improvement in your well-being
Q: Is it an alternative therapy or complimentary medicine?
A: Most definitely not. Teachers of The Alexander Technique are not therapists or medical practitioners - generally speaking. They do however undergo a rigourous three year training course before being entitled to put the initials MSTAT (Member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique) after their names. These initials are your guarantee that the Teacher is highly skilled in the application of The Technique.
Q: Is it a form of exercise like yoga or T'ai Chi?
A: No. The Alexander Technique is certainly not a form of physical education, like the above, which tell you what to do and how to do it, in order to get a specific gain. Rather, it is a form of physical re-education which shows you what not to do and how not to do it in order to get an overall improvement in your well-being.
Q: What happens during an Alexander Technique lesson?
A: During an Alexander Technique lesson your Teacher will make careful observations, and will guide you through everyday actions like sitting, standing, and laying down. In this way, you will have a practical demonstration of your true potential - which will only grow the more you practice The Technique.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Lessons are one-to-one, cost CHF 90.- and last 45 minutes.
Q: How many lessons will I need before I see an improvement?
A: As you might expect, this varies from person to person. But generally speaking, you should start to experience an improvement after 10 - 15 lessons.
Q: Why do I need a teacher? Why can’t I learn it myself?
A: As I’ve already said, The Alexander Technique undoes all the harmful habits we have acquired over the years. Because these habits are so ingrained, they feel natural. This means that doing the right thing would feel wrong.
Now imagine how difficult it would be to try and make an improvement in just one area of your life by consistently doing the wrong thing, and you begin to see the impossibility of making an improvement in your whole life this way. Which is why you need an Alexander Technique Teacher - at least at the beginning.
